Marimekko Musta Virta

In a break from tradition, I have been doing a little home deco sewing. Our vibrant but unadorned lounge was in urgent need of some sexy cushions. When you have some amazing fabric and a sewing machine on hand there’s no excuse not to whip up some simple cushion covers!

Now I’m sure most of you can sew a cushion cover blindfolded and standing on your head but in case you need a good tutorial, there is loads online. I have a few on my Pinterest “Useful Tutorials” board if you are interested. On a side note, I used Ikea 50cm x 50cm inserts. I wanted a plumper pillow so I made the covers smaller than the insert, in this case I cut out 46cm x 46cm squares so the finished size was 45 x 45 with a 1cm seam allowance. This gave me my desired amount of “plumpiness” if such a word exists.

Paavo Halonen and Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen were the design team behind Marimekko’s 2013 fabric print “Musta Virta” (Black Stream). It’s inspiration comes from the power of nature, depicting the sounds of ice the moment it begins to crack and melt.

I’m very pleased with my Marimekko cushions. Now they sit resplendant on our lounge, reclined upon and enjoyed!

  • Beautiful fabric choice, so happy and bright! I thought of you last weekend, we had a quick trip to sydney for our wedding anniversary and I dragged my husbo through the marimekko shop telling him about your trip! It’s such a shame they don’t sell their apparel fabric…..

    • Thanks Sarah! Congrats on your wedding anniversary and hope you had a great weekend. Isn’t the Marimekko store a dream! Yes I would love to get my hands on some of their sateens, jerseys and other apparel fabrics but that won’t stop me using some of their heavier weight home deco fabrics for apparel purposes!

  • I’m thinking I should pay Marimekko a visit one day (still haven’t been). Lovely cushions…and such a gratifying project with no fit issues! I’m making some cushion covers soon…fabric from Ikea however.

    • You so should Melanie – it’s a world of happiness in there! There’s nothing wrong with Ikea fabric – I’m quite the fan myself!

  • These look so cool. I can’t wait to see all the pieces you buy on your upcoming trip. Thanks for the fabric story too. I’m an addict to a fabric story.

    • Thanks Kirsty! I’m looking forward to getting my hands on some amazing fabric amongst other things. I too love a fabric story. Having an insight into the design makes it more meaningful for me.

  • Gorgeous colours! Pink and red are so good together. And I totally see the breaking ice in the design. So clever! I like your tip about making the cushions smaller then the case, that’s really handy! Thanks!

    • Thanks Catherine! Yes, the colours are great, they work so well with our lounge. I finally bucked the trend of slavishly following instructions by deliberately making the cushion covers smaller and am very happy with the result – definitely recommend it.

  • Just wanted to let you know that I love your blog and have nominated you for a liebster award!

    • Thanks Laurel! My first Liebster award nomination 🙂
